Product Review: The W Goaltending DVD Series
When it comes to instructional goalie videos these days, there’s quite an array of choices out there. You can even find a vast collection of drills on YouTube, or by digging through different goalie training websites.
Depending on your specific needs, these resources certainly carry value. But in a world where the position is constantly evolving, it pays to own a product that offers everything from the basics to the more advanced tactics of goaltending in one simple package.
Created by goalie coach Corey Wogtech, the W Goaltending Instructional DVD Series is less like an instructional video, and more like a progressive encyclopaedia of the refined and evolved butterfly style.
Even more importantly, it’s not over-complicated, over-produced, or trying to re-invent the wheel, either. It’s just a professional collection of Wogtech’s straightforward and effective lessons on how to be the best goaltender, and the best goalie coach, you can possibly be.
“I think there are a number of valuable attributes to be taken from this DVD series, for both coaches and goalies,” Wogtech said. “For goalies, it’s a continuous resource. Not every goalie can afford to regularly work with a goalie coach, and some cities might not offer sufficient goalie coaching. The DVD’s provide a wealth of knowledge that can be visited and revisited as goalies either struggle with certain aspects of their game, or work toward developing new aspects of their game.”
Let’s face it — quality instruction comes with a lofty price tag. Private lessons can range anywhere from $50 to $150 an hour, depending on who you work with. With parents constantly pouring hundreds of dollars into private lessons, many goalies and families realize that’s simply not a realistic approach.
But for the goalie or coach that is looking to build confidence in their game or approach from within, the W Goaltending series is a perfect match.
“From a coaching standpoint, this DVD series is invaluable. I can’t count the number of times I’ve had coaches tell me how little they know about goaltending,” Wogtech said. “They’re usually intimidated by the position, and therefore won’t offer much feedback. That, or they convey information incorrectly in an attempt to provide feedback, which usually ends up hurting both the team and the goalies. In this series, I personally walk through every skill set on screen in an easy to understand format, which is perfect for coaches who might be unsure of what to be teaching their goalies.”
As you would expect, Volume I of the series is all about the basics. Corey stands in his own crease and verbally explains the most basic elements of positioning, including the hands, skates, stick, and more. Multiple camera angles not only provide the true beginner with information to absorb in a simple manner, but it also gives the experienced goalie another way to gain new perspectives on old information.
“The series covers every aspect of goaltending, from the basics all the way up to complicated game situations – in future volumes,” Wogtech explained. “The correct and incorrect example tags make it easy for coaches to compare their goalies to the DVD demo goalies, and then decide which skills their goalies might need to focus on. They can then convey the teaching points from those chapters to help improve their goalies. Most importantly, hearing and seeing relevant, modern, correct information will give coaches the confidence and direction they need to help develop their goalies.”
Volume II of the series builds on Volume I by including more information and instruction on movement. This also includes a bonus section on effective off-ice training, which is a must-have for goalies looking to play at higher levels. From speed drills to reaction drills, Wogtech reinforces the importance of putting in the work in the gym, which is a must for every goalie at every level.
In Volume II of Wogtech’s series, you’ll also learn more about the different type of butterfly recoveries, slides, and backside pushes. There are sections dedicated to rotations, as well as different concepts regarding efficient hole coverage, and much more.
Maybe the most exciting aspect of Wogtech’s three-set instructional series is his ability to coach the mental toughness aspects of goaltending. Volume III includes a chapter totally dedicated to the “Mental Makeup” of goaltending. You’ll also find a few of these teasers in Volume I and II.
This aspect helps separate his instructional series from other ones you might find, and really reinforces the importance of not only strengthening your skills and your body, but also your mind.
Another element that truly sets W Goaltending’s instructional DVD series apart from others is the professional post-production. From the multiple-angle and split-screen views to the “correct-incorrect” tags and unique 3-D diagrams, this is an instructional DVD series that takes video analysis to the next level.
“If I had to name the major benefits of these videos for advanced or intermediate goalie, I would say the 3-D imagery combined with the mental make up chapters,” Wogtech echoed. “Mental control with an educated outlook is a major component to high level goaltending. That, combined with a strong perspective of geometrical net space and angle management skills. Those are all extremely high level skill sets.”
As someone who has personally followed Wogtech’s goalie coaching career over the past five years, The Goalie Guild trusts his ability to effectively portray the constantly-evolving position. He works with high-level goalies from the NCAA to the AHL levels, and he even gets on the ice with NHL goaltenders from time-to-time.
“For advanced goalies, future volumes will provide a lot of situational information, which will obviously be of great benefit,” Wogtech said. “The first three volumes, however, provide the most important information for any goalie at any level. Angle management, movement, puck stopping, and rebound control. Mastery of those four things is a failsafe key to great goaltending. When working with NHL goalies, the majority of my time is spent teaching the basics at a faster, more precise level. It’s a mistake for any goalie to overlook the importance of these aspects, and they should always attempt to improve on them in one way or another.”
More importantly, it proves Wogtech put his heart and soul into creating his new masterpiece. It was carefully crafted with passion and precision, and that makes this series even more valuable for coaches and goalies around the globe.
“It was a long process,” Wogtech said. “Shooting and production took a total of three years! The filming and editing spanned five states and two countries, and I worked with too many amazing people to list here. I wanted to offer the best, most well-shot information on the market, and I wanted it to be easily understandable by both goalies and non-goalies alike. It was impossible to provide all of the information that I would have liked – especially in a concise format, but I believe my production team has compiled the greatest wealth of goaltending knowledge available in a DVD format. Volumes IV and V are still being produced, and they expand greatly on what we have already provided, so it should be an amazing goalie resource once the set is completely released!”

I highly recommend this!
I had the privilege of having a 1-on-1 session with Corey a few months ago. He was extremely informative and very patient (I’m a little older and slower than I used to be). I highly recommend this series to anyone who wants to learn from a true professional!
