Mask of the Week: Marc Despins
We’ve had a lot of amazing nominations for Mask of the Week lately, but today’s winner is hands down the most unique mask of them all. Pain Inc Designs was commissioned by Marc Despins, a die-hard Oilers fan, to paint a tribute mask of Dwayne Roloson’s time in Edmonton, but using a Mike Luit style vintage mask.
As you can see, the result is an awesome combination of Oilers goaltending past and present. The mask features three different cogs, each one with a year the Oilers won the Stanley Cup. The whole thing is electrically charged with white lightning strikes spreading throughout the rig.
“Because the vintage style masks have so much more real estate, we wanted to make the mask unique in itself,” said Pain Inc Designs artist JD Dirom. “We added the framework of the oil derrick in the front of the mask, using the angles of the cut vents to compliment the structure of the derrick itself.”
Not much else needs to be said to explain the beauty and classic feel of this week’s winner. We love the incorporation of the Oilers’ alternative logo mark, as that ties in the present Oilers’ look on a historic mask that will continue to last through the ages.
Be sure to check out the Pain Inc Designs website and learn more about some of their amazing mask art projects!
