Virginia-based goalie Mike Clagett sent us a message on GoalieStore BB yesterday about his wicked World of Warcraft mask that was recently completed by our friend Don McClelland over at MACMASKS. One look at this beauty and we were sold on our winner for Mask of the Week!

This medieval-themed Sportmask Razor is jaw-dropping, really. From a thematic point of view, it’s extremely eye-appealing, as numerous phthalo and navy shades create an icy cold and cavernous atmosphere. It’s fierce, but in a somewhat subtle and sleek manner, as rigid mountains in the background complete the theme’s setting.

The theme is based on the Wrath of the Lich King expansion for World of Warcraft. On the left is the Lich King and his pet dragon, Sindragosa, is on the right.

Finally the crest on the forehead, is the crest of the Kingdom of Lordearon, which is the kingdom that the Lich King was prince of prior to him becoming corrupted and turning into the undead Lich King.

A special thanks to Mike for letting us post some of these photos, so be sure to check out his mask personal write-up on the GoalieStore BB.

“The best thing about Don’s paint practice as opposed to others, is that he lists right on his website where your paintjob is sitting in his list,” Mike explained in his GSBB write-up. ”He provides a sketch of the work to be done prior to starting it, and lets you know the status of the paintjob, as well as the other paintjobs he has waiting.”

“In addition to this, he also broadcasts his paint studio live via web cam so I was actually able to watch my mask get painted from start to finish. This was really a fun and exciting experience since I find these sort of things really interesting, plus it helped me deal with how ridiculously impatient I am!”

Ahh yes, the frustrating factor of impatience. The bane of a goalie’s existence – waiting for new gear. Waiting for paint to dry. Waiting for FedEx and UPS trucks to drive down your street and come to a stop in front of your house.

Impatience is one thing all professional mask artists have come to understand early in their career. Not only with their own grueling and painstaking practice, but through the many excited clients just foaming at the mouth to get a glimpse of finished work.

And when a Mask Artist holds an airbrush in their hand, they also hold the future fate of a goalie’s aura. How a goalie looks on the ice is part of what he stands for and why he steps between the pipes. It may be April Fool’s Day, but there’s no fooling with something as sacred as that.

Godspeed to all of our sponsored Mask Artists and thanks to our readers and members for sending us such great masks! Be sure to check out our Mask Artist Directory and Medieval Mask Design Contest Updates as well!
