Mask of the Week: CJ Latham
With only 11 days left until our Medieval Mask Design Contest II ends, we continue to promote the latest entries by nominating CJ Latham’s design for Mask of the Week!
When it comes to a theme that incorporates a Crown, Latham totally nailed it. He took advantage of the 500-word limit for the essay portion of his entry, bringing some great insight and background into his Buddhist-themed design.
“On the left side of the mask you will see a punk rock Buddha riding Godzilla with the British Flag as the back drop. For me I was drawn into the Buddhist culture through a movement called Dharma Punx. Being that punk rock music and life style has been a part of my life for so many years, this movement showed me that Buddhism was not just a bunch of hippies sitting around meditating but rather a way of going against the stream or the social norm which is the mantra for the punk rock movement. One reason that I fee goaltending and Buddhism go hand in hand so well is that the Buddha teaches us to control our thoughts and emotions, and if there is anything that we know about goaltending is that the game itself is about 80% mental 20% physical.”
Click on his design above to read the rest of his essay and be sure to keep visiting over the next few weeks as we prepare to judge the official entries and determine our MMDCII Champion. If you want to get in quickly, just click the Masked Marvel template below and download the full-sized version now!
Also be sure to learn about the MMDCII official mask artist sponsor, Mike Learn Design and Airbrushing! Mike is a great friend that was kind enough to donate a free mask design in our Quest for the Crown 2 silent auction and has been nice enough to paint a mask again this year for the MMDCII!
And for those that have been following along since the beginning, here’s how the first MMDC mask, which was won by Aaron Camponi and painted by Taylor-Made Graphics, turned out!
