THE STORY BEHIND THE SCHOLARSHIP

After reading Chris Koentges’ inspiring and moving article on Urpo Ylonen and Finnish goaltending, Goldman prepared for the research journey of a lifetime. His second book, Between Two Worlds, would lead to a spiral across North America and over to Helsinki in order to learn about the beauty and intricacy that is Finnish goaltending culture.

“No matter how much I adored Finland from afar, I never gained a true appreciation for their goaltending culture until I was actually there, breathing in the air and working on the ice with Finnish goalies,” Goldman said. “This annual scholarship will give goalie coaches the same special opportunity I had in the summer of 2014. It’s one that could change your life as a goalie coach forever. I am very thankful for my friend Jukka, as he has been more than generous while working with The Goalie Guild to offer this chance to spend one week inside the Finnish Goalie Factory.”
