The October Saves Goalie Challenge is a community-based charity event that supports various cancer research initiatives. Goalies across the USA are asked to collect pledges from friends and family for every save they make during the month of October. A collection of prizes from their sponsors are then awarded to the top fundraisers.
In addition to donating rewards like books, apparel, and gear, The Goalie Guild has partnered with October Saves to promote the event and participating goalies on social media in order to raise more awareness for the charitable organization.
“We believe in the October Saves initiative and we’re committed to helping them grow,” said The Goalie Guild founder Justin Goldman. “This event advocates core values like community service and charity work to the goalie community while fighting cancer, which is in perfect alignment with our foundation’s mission.”
October Saves was launched in 2014 by the Ashburn Xtreme hockey club (Virginia). By 2016, it had rapidly grown to include the entire Chesapeake Bay Hockey League. A total of 185 goalies raised approximately $100,000 for a collection of beneficiaries, including Lara’s League (a women’s cancer research fund) and the Inova Schar Cancer Institute.
“October Saves is committed to building stronger goalies both on and off the ice,” said board member Lara Hopewell. “Our goal is to encourage our young goalies by building around a community that supports them in their efforts to be leaders on and off the ice. There isn’t a club out there that hasn’t been touched by cancer, so it means a lot to these kids to join the fight to end it. Goalies truly can make a difference, and we are!”
The Goalie Guild, which aims to enhance and advance goaltending at the grassroots levels, was originally established in 2009. In 2014, it transformed into an educational nonprofit foundation offering annual scholarships to underprivileged goalies. Goldman’s collection of books have also gone a long way in providing goalies of all ages with the opportunity to grow in a holistic, well-rounded manner.
“What makes October Saves so special is that it promotes selfless giving, a key holistic trait that is extremely important to a young athlete’s development,” Goldman said. “When goalies have a chance to stop pucks for a purpose other than themselves, it develops an egoless approach and a professional mentality. The fight against cancer matters to every human being on the planet, so this charitable cause is something that connects us all.”
Registration for the 2017 October Saves Goalie Challenge begins September 15. For more information on this year’s event, including a list of rewards, beneficiaries, and details on how you can get involved, please visit www.octobersaves.org.
