The October Saves Goalie Challenge is a community-based charity event that supports a number of cancer research initiatives. Every October, goalies across the USA are asked to collect pledges from friends and family for every save they make. In addition to donating prizes for the top fundraisers, The Goalie Guild is committed to raising more awareness for October Saves through an annual training scholarship that provides underprivileged US-born goalies that are battling cancer or a cancer-related illnesses an opportunity to receive a special summer training or mentoring experience.
October Saves was launched in 2014 by the Ashburn Xtreme hockey club (Virginia). By 2016, it had rapidly grown to include the entire Chesapeake Bay Hockey League. A total of 185 goalies raised approximately $100,000 for a collection of beneficiaries, including Lara’s League (a women’s cancer research fund) and the Inova Schar Cancer Institute. In 2017, the participation grew exponentially, as a total of 685 goalies across North America rallied behind the #MakeSavesCount campaign.
“October Saves is committed to building stronger goalies both on and off the ice,” said board member Lara Hopewell. “Our goal is to encourage our young goalies by building around a community that supports them in their efforts to be leaders on and off the ice. There isn’t a club out there that hasn’t been touched by cancer, so it means a lot to these kids to join the fight to end it. Goalies truly can make a difference, and we are!”
The Goalie Guild, which aims to enhance and advance goaltending at the grassroots levels, was originally established in January of 2009. Five years later, in January of 2014, it transformed into an educational nonprofit foundation offering annual scholarships to underprivileged goalies. Aside from the scholarship program, The Goalie Guild provides a number of educational programs and social media platforms that provide goalies across the country an opportunity to grow in a holistic, well-rounded manner.
“What makes October Saves so special is that it promotes selfless giving and community service, key holistic traits that are vital to a young athlete’s development,” TGG founder Justin Goldman said. “When goalies have a chance to stop pucks for a purpose other than themselves, it builds an egoless approach and builds character. The fight against cancer matters to every human being on the planet; regardless of our upbringing or differences, it connects us all. That’s why this charitable cause is something we’ll be supporting for years to come.”
